With the airport in Walterboro and Boeing just a short drive away, avionics is a real career option for our community’s youth. To inspire and educate, USC Salkehatchie and Boeing offer a 3-day Take Flight! Aviation Camp to local 8th graders. The event is held on the Walterboro campus in the spring of each year.
During Aviation Camp, students are exposed to aviation and the careers surrounding the industry. Students can then make an informed decision about their future.
This STEM-based camp exposes students to a variety of activities from piloting to programming drones. Visits to Tuskegee Airmen monument and the USS Yorktown provide a historical context to the advancement of aviation industry. Students tour the Lowcountry Airport, Lowcountry Aviation, Boeing and Joint Base Charleston. They adorn headsets as control tower managers while taking part of the USS Yorktown’s Flight Academy. Finally, students soar to new heights as they step into the cockpit simulator and take off.
Students are offered the opportunity to extend the camp into the 4th day and join the Young Eagles for a complimentary flight.
