Leadership Salkehatchie group meets with lawmakers in Washington

After nine months of touring the Salkehatchie counties and learning more about each area, the Leadership Salkehatchie group reported their findings to South Carolina’s Congressmen during a trip to Washington, D.C.

USC Salkehatchie, in collaboration with Southern Carolina Regional Alliance, annually offer the Leadership Salkehatchie program to Salkehatchie region community members interested in economically developing the area.

“Leadership Salkehatchie was developed as part of a long-standing partnership between Southern Carolina Alliance and USC Salkehatchie. The goal of the program is to provide participants an opportunity to develop enhanced leadership skills while becoming aware of and involved with community dynamics and issues in the Salkehatchie region (Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties),” said Jessica Goodwin, interim director of Leadership Salkehatchie.

The group meets once a month and covers topics that include economic development, tourism assets and natural resources, education, conflict management, and legislative advocacy. Participants are nominated by regional business, industry and educational leaders and selected by an application committee to represent each county during Leadership Salkehatchie’s nine-month program.

The final session took the group to Washington, D.C. on April 18 for a one-day visit with South Carolina’s senators and representatives. The group met with Senator Lindsey Graham, Senator Tim Scott, and Representative James Clyburn, as well as each congressman’s staff and the staffs of Representative Mark Sanford and Representative Joe Wilson.

“Following the completion of this program, these newly-enhanced leaders are then well prepared to help our region advance towards ever increasing levels of community health and success,” said Goodwin.

Nominations are currently being sought for the 2018/2019 Leadership Salkehatchie class. If you would like to nominate someone for this program, please contact Heather Judy at hjudy@mailbox.sc.edu or at (843) 782-8641 for more information.
